Joint research, international exchange and new impulses for social work at GJU

Prof. Dr. Joachim Schroeder was a visiting professor at the German Jordanian University (GJU) from 20 October 2024 to 20 February 2025.

The visiting professorship was based in the Department of Social Work at the SAHSS faculty. I already knew my colleagues there from shorter stays in previous years. During the four-month stay, we worked together on topics such as migration and flight, university development through service learning, disability and inclusion, especially with regard to education and social work. PhD students from GJU and professors from the Department of Social Work and University of from Hamburg took part in a Winter School on Research in Social Work. We will continue to hold such workshops in the coming years.

One important topic was the Global Disability Summit, which Germany and Jordan jointly hosted in Berlin in 2025, with a Pre-Conference in Amman in 2024. This opportunity has been used to establish an exchange of academics working in the field of disability, inclusion in international cooperation. We very much hope that this network will also be of interest to the GJU.

Thank you for the invitation!

The support from the DAAD, the GJU Presidency, the Faculty and Deanship SAHSS and the Department of Social Work was excellent at all stages of the invitation, preparation, implementation and completion of the guest stay, for which I would like to express my sincere and warm thanks to everyone involved. The temporary research stay was an extraordinary experience for me.
