Time to say hello to our corporate partner PTB Ingenieure

The overhead lines pass by the window, the track bed orange in the morning sun. We are sitting on the train – RB 13 to Leipzig.

PTB Ingenieure awaits us: a family-run company specializing in engineering services for railway construction and future mobility. Its largest client is Deutsche Bahn.

More houses, more graffiti, more colourful – we should be there soon in the LA of eastern Germany, only with an E instead of an A – less beach and more greenery. From the main station, we continue by tram. A few minutes later, we are standing in front of a glass building.

In the attic, Robert Reißner, managing director at PTB, welcomes us with a sweeping view over Leipzig. He takes the time for a chat and a tour of the premises.

From Deutsche Bahn to PTB Ingenieure

Robert Reißner deliberately chose a practical start to his career, training as a train dispatcher at Deutsche Bahn instead of going to university. He spent 15 years with the company, qualifying as a specialist, and later completed a part-time bachelor's and master's degree in industrial engineering. About seven years ago, he moved to PTB, initially as branch manager in Leipzig with 30 employees. Today, he manages the site with over 100 employees, and the company has around 400 employees throughout Germany. He has been a member of the management board of the entire group of companies for a year.

During a tour of the office, Robert explains how he has transformed the space into an open, communicative working environment – with a central communal kitchen, short distances and space for interaction. He made a conscious decision to move to a medium-sized company: “Here I have creative freedom. The knowledge I gained during my time at Deutsche Bahn still helps me every day.”

Corporate culture & commitment

There is a soccer table in front of the window and a homemade flower box made from Euro pallets on the balcony. We discover a few strawberry plants in it. In spring and summer, it is really green – a community garden, Robert explains to us.

“We are young, dynamic, and value sustainability and social values.” It is important that it is not just “family business” on the outside, but that this is also truly lived.

PTB also shows this on its Instagram profile. In addition to pictures of rails, bridges, and construction vehicles, we also find team pictures in sports outfits, with shiny medals here and there. “The social component between colleagues is incredibly important. That's why we attend many different events to promote social cohesion,” explains Robert.

This year's highlight was Germany's nationwide “Railway Day,” when PTB got people of all ages excited about railways with its “Plan & Bahn Family Summer Festival” event.

Robert is also proud that PTB was awarded the DB supplier rating for outstanding performance as a partner company last year – ranking among the top 3 out of 5,000 companies. The company also achieves high scores in the annual EcoVadis sustainability certificate. This is a prerequisite for contracts with the railway. No problem for PTB, as responsibility for the environment, employee rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement are high priorities for the company.

Fields of work

During our tour, we see many offices but also open-plan workspaces – chic cubicles with visual and acoustic insulation. Everyone greets us with a smile. Gymnastic rings hang under a staircase, ready to be hooked up.

PTB sees itself as a “full-service provider”: project management, consulting, construction supervision, planning, structural engineering, track construction, control and safety technology – complex large-scale projects require all of these portfolios. “That's what makes it exciting. We support billion-euro projects throughout Germany,” explains Robert. Open structures, modern workplaces, and a noticeably collegial atmosphere characterize the atmosphere at PTB.

Internships at PTB Ingenieure

PTB is basically looking for people in almost all areas of the company. Students should try things out, discover their strengths, and join the company where they feel comfortable.

The main fields of study in demand are economics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and environmental subjects. However, attitude is more important: “Commitment, curiosity, and ambition – if you have these qualities, you are very welcome here.”

In conclusion

“Railways may not sound very sexy at first,” says Robert with a laugh. “But the field is extremely varied, very well funded, and socially relevant.” Anyone interested in participating in future-proof large-scale projects will find exciting opportunities at PTB and the chance to help shape infrastructure for generations to come.

Summary

We noticed how much passion there is behind PTB Ingenieure. Anyone who brings passion with them will have good prospects in the company and will find plenty of room for development, a family-like atmosphere, and genuine appreciation. Successes are shared and team spirit is a top priority. The mere opportunity to find your personal feel-good zone within the company shows how much value the company places on the satisfaction of its employees.

We take this spirit with us.

We are sitting on the train again, two small folding boxes of Chinese food in our hands. “Just do what you love!” we read again on the website.
